Components of an effective induction program
Back to: Design an effective induction program
An induction program can be much more than just OJT; an opportunity for the organization to welcome a new employee via a session, or series of sessions, that help them settle into their new roles, working environments and getting to know their new colleagues.

The following components are instrumental to make the induction an effective one :
- Administrative and HR processes. Get the obvious out of the way by putting all the leave/off application, photo for IDs and site passes, uniforms, bank account information, passwords and claim forms etc. in one accessible location and ensure the candidate goes through them all and sign at the end of the checklist.
- CBM’s vision, goals, mission and values. This will quickly give the candidate a good feel of the culture they can expect to be working in.
- The workplace tour. Especially for offsite operation staff, giving them a small map will help them a lot. Ensure they know the emergency exits, assembly area, washrooms, where to buy suitable food, pantry and other important locations. Also, they should know where to retrieve important equipment, forms and information ie. the store room.
- Introduce them to other colleagues, and also the key personnel, especially those whom they will need information or resources from regularly. Be sure that they know the members in their reporting line, and how to escalate issues to.
- Arrange for one-to-one sessions with relevant stakeholders and department heads or site supervisors. Help the candidates pull critical relationships closer by making appointments with the site owners, suppliers, or other relevant department heads.
- A breakdown and explanation of their job role, as well as the job responsibilities and expectations of their conduct and performance. Arrange for the proper and relevant personnel to provide this plan to the candidate in person. A timeline detailing the expected tasks and duties will help the learners anticipate and prepare.
- Give a special welcome and check if they have any other requirements.

What other components do you think could help induct a new staff quickly into his/her role?
